Our contribution to the current Mars mission

e.solutions has a long history. It all started with 3SOFT GmbH, an innovative, medium-sized company in Erlangen, which was acquired by Elektrobit in 2004. In 2009 e.solutions became a joint venture between Elektrobit and Audi in 2009.

In our eventful history, we have not only developed automotive software. Still as 3SOFT, our colleagues modified the real-time operating system VxWorks for the radiation hardened CPU RAD6000 (Radiation Hardened IBM RISC 6000), which already made its way to Mars in 1996 in the NASA probe "Pathfinder". The current NASA mission "Mars 2020", with the rover "Perseverance" and the Mars helicopter "Ingenuity", uses of course somewhat more current hardware. But with the RAD750 the same CPU family, the same operating system and a little bit of code from us.

The colleagues from back then are still part of the e.solutions family today and use their experience to ensure that our software safely powers millions of cars every day. With their diverse contributions to countless open source projects, our younger colleagues have also played their part in the impressive flight of "Ingenuity" on Mars and can now enjoy the Mars 2020 badge in their GitHub profiles.

Congratulations to NASA for this great achievement and, of course, to our colleagues who did their part to make it happen
